semester 26/27 | (UN)FRAMING PERSPECTIVES
As part of the course (UN)FRAMING PERSPECTIVES, two thematic strands will be pursued under the guiding theme of the visual culture master modul SPECTRAL VISUALITIES: NECROAESTHETICS AND THE POWER OF IMAGES IN THE AGE OF AI at the faculty of architecture, Technical University Vienna.
Drawing on art and cultural history as well as contemporary cultural production, the course will present strategies for making visible both structures of power and what has been rendered invisible through marginalization, along with their effects on the built environment. Particular attention will be given to spatial practices, whether of an installational or architectural nature, or to performative and other temporary practices that alter perception.
At the same time, different approaches to curatorial practice will be introduced through the lens of institution-critical artworks and texts. Curators inevitably manage the resource of visibility and frame the perspective of audiences. How can these mechanisms be made transparently visible and further developed into a productive, equitable dialogue with both artists and audiences? Through workshops, students will explore strategies for making access to curated visibility more inclusive and for emancipating audience perception from the framing effects of curatorial practice.
Parallel to the exploration of the artistic strategies outlined above, the concept for the final presentation of the semester projects of the modul will be developed.
semester 25/26 | in search for artificially enhanced creative processes
Is AI disrupting creative processes as we know them or is it simply a new tool among many? The course will search for artistic practices incorporating AI beyond image generation and ask what role AI can play in complex works of art or architectural designs.
The course takes a brief cultural-historical look at medial upheavals in art history and beyond in order to sharpen the sense for the effects of the use of AI. Excursions to artists’ studios are undertaken to gain direct insights into artistic practice with AI processes in exchange with the artists. In the plenary session of the course group, works of art that incorporate AI beyond image-generative processes will be discussed.
semester 24/25 | of other practices
Because the built environment extends into all areas of life, architecture as both a theoretical and practical discipline stands at numerous intersections and maintains reciprocal relationships with artistic, commercial, social, research‑based, and other practices. Without practicing architecture themselves, Anna Resch and Sebastian Jobst (Konnektom) have been engaged in a wide range of architecture‑related projects for more than 15 years. Their work spans from editing cultural and architectural history publications, serving as editors‑in‑chief of the former journal of the Federal Chamber of Architects and Civil Engineering Consultants, conceptualizing and realizing transdisciplinary music/performance productions, and co‑developing and co‑directing a transdisciplinary art institution, to coordinating an international EU project aimed at promoting architectural competitions.
Within the framework of the course, students gain insight into the structures and practical foundations of such projects. In addition, the course examines their embedding within cultural ecosystems, theoretical and cultural studies reference systems, as well as the commercial conditions that shape this transdisciplinary practice.
