BRAUCHEN
A performative concert evening
People have always gathered around music to experience it together. Customs, rituals, and social conventions may differ in their details, yet they share a common core that connects musicians and audiences alike. Music does not only require performers, instruments, space, seating, and listeners; it is also shaped—often almost imperceptibly—by gestures, conventions, and processes that structure how it is created and received.
In Brauchen, Marco Döttlinger, Thomas Hörl, Peter Jakober, Sebastian Jobst, Peter Kozek, Alexander Martinz, and Anna Resch explore these conditions in a transmedia concert performance. The work focuses on space, gesture, performance rhythm, and the relationship between stage and audience, giving particular attention to the audience as self-aware participants in the act of reception.
The customs of the classical concert setting are interwoven with gestures drawn from vernacular musical traditions. Expectations are reflected, disrupted, and reconfigured. Through moments of concentration, density, and contemplation, the evening creates space to breathe.
The members of the project team have previously collaborated in various constellations across concerts, film productions, exhibitions, and performances. For Brauchen, they combine their experience and expertise to create a multilayered work that unfolds across sound, image, movement, and spatial intervention.
Marco Döttlinger, Peter Jakober, and Alexander Martinz composed new works specifically for the project. As a versatile ensemble working between music and performance, ensemble]h[iatus serves as a mediator between these fields. Projections and choreography by Thomas Hörl and Peter Kozek enter into dialogue with the music, while the interactive environment developed together with Konnektom—including objects, wearables, and spatial interventions—renders everyday rituals visible.
