When the InterContinental Vienna opened in 1964, it promised to become a gateway to the world for the city and its inhabitants. As Austria's first internationally branded hotel, and one of the earliest InterContinental properties in Europe, it embodied a new era of global connectivity and cosmopolitan exchange.
During the Cold War, Austria found itself in an unique geopolitical position as the easternmost frontier of the Western world. Vienna's early integration into the Pan American Airways network, the original parent company of the InterContinental Hotel Group, together with the growing presence of international organizations, transformed the city into a key meeting point between East and West.
Tor zur Welt / Since 1964 - A View to the World explores this remarkable chapter of Vienna's history through essays by leading authors and experts. The contributions examine the hotel's significance in architecture, urban planning, cultural life, gastronomy, and the broader social transformations that shaped Vienna's post-war identity.
In 2014, the publication was selected as one of Austria's Most Beautiful Books by the Austrian Booksellers Association and the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Public Service and Sport.
Before founding Konnektom, Sebastian Jobst served as Editorial and Production Manager for the publication on behalf of art:phalanx. Konnektom subsequently developed and expanded the book for its English-language edition, published with Amalthea in autumn 2015.
