RAINER PROHASKA
Rainer Prohaska opens up alternative perspectives on everyday objects and conventions of use. Mass-produced industrial products and building materials, formally shaped by the logic of technical practicality, are reassessed and employed in new contexts. Private forms of spatial use are fragmented and implemented in public space: the village fountain becomes a bathroom through an installative intervention, the chapel becomes a bedroom, the car park becomes the MOBILE TEA HOUSE.
Over the course of his artistic practice, Prohaska continuously developed the Toy-Kit Architecture for the construction of these temporary architectures. Characteristic elements of these structures are H20 concrete formwork beams, which are fixed into temporary sculptures using flexible and highly durable ratchet tie-down straps. The construction principle of the Toy-Kit Architectures is extremely stable, structurally reliable, intuitive, and easy to handle. This makes it possible to involve viewers in both the building process and the use of the spatial interventions. As a result, alongside formal and aesthetic experience, social interaction plays a central role in Prohaska’s works.
RELATIONS | Catalogue
The publication RELATIONS takes stock of Rainer Prohaska’s work to date and brings together, across 168 pages, the most important works he realised worldwide between 2006 and 2018. In keeping with the inner logic of Prohaska’s oeuvre, RELATIONS structures the projects around four guiding themes: SPATIAL HACKING, TECHNOLOGY, EXPLORATIONS, and CULINARY COMMUNICATION. Plans and sketches provide insight into the conception of the projects. The book was published by Verlag für Moderne Kunst and presented on 17 September 2018 as part of Rainer Prohaska’s exhibition PONTE EST at KUNST HAUS WIEN.
The concept, texts, design, and editorial work for the publication were developed by Konnektom. Contributions by Bianca Regl, Karel Dudesek, and Jörn Weisbrodt complete RELATIONS.
